Newsletter: Harsh cartoons on climate and Climate Change Conference Copyright money from Mohammed cartoons pay new homepage with satiric drawings On November 4, Danish Cartoonists will launch a satiric homepage. Every day up to and during the UN Climate Change Conference COP15 in Copenhagen, various cartoonists will contribute with a satiric drawing related to “climate and climate change conference”. Straight out the cartoonists and drawings will currently comment on the climate debate, and in this way try to illustrate the outstanding part that cartoonists play in the media. The homepage is financed by one of the biggest controversies about newspaper drawings in recent time – the 12 Mohammed cartoons. These drawings were printed in media worldwide, and the royalties engendered have been set apart in a fund that pays the new homepage, CARICATURE.dk. ”Cartoonists want and have to take part in current debates. With this initiative we want to accentuate the tradition that Danish newspapers and other media have, when it comes to satiric drawings, and CARICATURE.dk will show the world that talent and freedom of expression are far beyond focusing on Mohammed, tells Claus Seidel, chairman of Danish Cartoonists. The big Danish satire tradition, dating back to even before the 1800’ies, was “quality-marked” already at the introduction of Grundloven, the basic Danish law, and with it the right to express an opinion both in words and lines. The authorities were annoyed by the flourishing satire, whereas the man in the street took great pleasure in it. The cartoonists were hard-working, and slow but sure their own satire culture is founded, which in a hilarious and provoking manner expands in the big newspapers that thrive, and especially in the satiric Christmas publications “Blæksprutten” and “Svikmøllen”. No restrictions are seen here, however humor and smile are pacifying elements. The satire drawing soon becomes an indispensable part of the daily newspaper with a prominent position, often side by side with the leading article of the newspaper. Here the cartoonist is untouchable and sovereign with only the guidelines of the ordinary ethics of the press and Grundloven ranking higher. We only have few examples of intervening chief editors, who have opposed to the publishing of a drawing by referring to the press ethical rules and guidelines of the newspaper. Being used to work under these conditions, the publishing of the 12 Mohammed cartoons in Jyllandsposten became a rude awakening. The feedback was violent, and the 12 drawings were published over and over in media worldwide. On behalf of the cartoonists, The Danish Federation of Journalists tried to collect the royalties that are normally paid for publishing a drawing, but most of the media failed to pay. The few royalties that however were paid have now been put into a fund to finance CARICATURE.dk. ”Instead of paying 1.500 to 2000 euro to each of the 12 cartoonists, we agreed from the very outset to put the money into a fund aiming at taking Danish cartoon drawing into the future”, says Claus Seidel, chairman of Danish Cartoonists. In the course of time CARICATURE.dk will also tackle other topics than the climate. HUMAN RIGTHSDanish cartoonists celebrates 60 years with the European Convention for Human Rights with new drawings throughout 2010. Join the debate! The Right 2 Be: Human Rights and Human Wrongs is a project dedicated to communicating human rights to the people for the people by the people. It is a tribute to the right to be. The right to be human. The right to be you. Whoever, however, wherever you are. These rights are implicitly protected in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in the European Convention on Human Rights and in other legal documents. We want to make them alive. Give them motion. Translate them into what they are really all about in our everyday life. The project will bring light on how they are enjoyed and how they are violated. |
